The Schools White Paper, 'The Importance of Teaching', was published on 24th November 2010 , outlining “the steps necessary to enact whole-system reform in England”.
Encompassing structural change and attention to standards, the paper includes “a plan for attracting and training even better teachers”.
With the changes and plans detailed the aim is to ‘out pace the world’s best, making England one of the best global educators. '
So, what does this all mean for maths?
Here are the key mathematics highlights that we’ve extracted from the report…
Results and accountability…
· Children will be expected to master the core arithmetical functions by the time they leave primary school.
· There will be a target of at least 60% of pupils achieving L4 in both English and Mathematics by the end of KS2 ; there will also be a measure for expected levels of progress between KS1 and 2
Teacher Training…
· Initial teacher training will include key skills to be developed in the teaching of early mathematics.
· Extra support will be provided for more specialist maths teachers in primary schools
