Oxford University Press (OUP) announces that it has completed the acquisition of Numicon Ltd. Numicon provides a multi-sensory primary maths teaching programme that engages learners with its visual, auditory and kinaesthetic approach.
The acquisition augments OUP’s maths presence in the UK schools sector and the universal applicability of the Numicon pedagogical approach and resources presents clear opportunities to enhance the learning experience for pupils around the world.
“We constantly underestimate how difficult and abstract maths can be for many children”, commented Rod Theodorou, Business Director for OUP Primary. “One thing young children do understand and remember is pattern. The Numicon teaching programme, which makes use of shapes, builds on this innate sense of pattern to give children a deep and lasting core understanding of mathematics. The support Numicon provides in classroom-tested resources and professional development is second to none.”
"We are passionate about bringing the benefits of the Numicon approach to as many learners as possible and believe that OUP will be the perfect home for the ongoing development of the Numicon Project", commented Mike Ellicock, on behalf of the Numicon founders.
“This is a truly exciting opportunity for OUP as well as for existing and future Numicon customers,” commented Kate Harris, Managing Director of the OUP Education Division. “Numicon has developed from a classroom based research project in 1996 and since has been adopted by thousands of schools as a highly enjoyable and transformational way to teach mathematics. OUP supports research-proven ideas that make a real difference to children’s achievement, so we look forward to helping Numicon reach even more children.”
