New Primary Curriculum

Thursday 22nd April 2010
Primary Curriculum

The primary curriculum has been redesigned and includes: curriculum aims; essentials for learning and life; six areas of learning; religious education.

During the many school visits that Sir Jim Rose made as part of his review of the Primary Curriculum, he came down to Sussex to see Numicon Shapes and Cuisenaire Rods in action in two Primary Schools. Should the new curriculum go ahead, we believe that the Numicon Teaching Activities will be a tremendous support to teachers as they implement the Primary Curriculum with its emphases on number relationships, looking for patterns and problem solving. Structured apparatus is suggested alongside number lines and number squares in the notes on curriculum progression for Number and the number system. In the section Number operations and calculation there is an emphasis on mental arithmetic, understanding of the equals symbol and empty box notation, which are progressively covered in the Numicon Teaching Activities, in practical ways that children enjoy. We welcome the encouragement for enhancing mathematical understanding through creative cross curricula links and the emphasis on communication and problem solving. We will be adapting our teaching activities to take account of this as we review our teaching materials over the coming months.
