This page introduces the Numicon approach and details the ways in which we at Numicon may be able to help you to improve children’s enjoyment of, and achievement in maths in your Authority this year. Use the links for further information or to download support materials. Guidance and information relating to resources for specific settings can found in the other ‘Who is Numicon for?’ areas.
Although we have been around for ten years, the benefits of Numicon and the multi-sensory approach for both teachers and children has only recently gained national recognition; we are supporting the Every Child Counts programme with training for their Teacher Leaders, and we featured strongly in the Williams Review.
The use of Numicon has grown through grass-roots support among teachers across the country and through working very successfully with several Local Authorities. We are now keen to work with more Local Authority teams to support the effective use of Numicon in your schools. We can offer the following, which I hope may be of interest to you:

Resources
We provide all Numicon materials at a discount to Local Authority Maths and Learning Support teams for their own use.

For help advising schools you can download a spreadsheet containing details of the “standard” Numicon resources that we would recommend for a one form entry school including prices and recommended quantities.
Training
We can provide an intensive 1 day training course specifically designed for LA teams. Authority teams that have received our training include Leeds, Cambridgeshire, Brighton & Hove, Dudley, Bury, Derbyshire, Thurrock, Essex and Tower Hamlets.
We have a team of Independent Numicon Accredited trainers who can provide professional development for schools on an individual basis, or deliver central training days for the Maths Subject Leaders / Specialists / Sencos from your schools. we are currently working with the NCETM to develop a Quality Standard for maths CPD and I am sure that the excellent feedback that we have received from Teachers to date will continue.
Finally, we can train 1 or 2 members of your team to become a Local Authority Numicon Accredited trainer, who can then provide training across your team and your schools. Please contact us to find out when the next training dates are.
Conferences
We can provide key note presentations or workshops up to one hour in length which are tailored to the particular focus of the conference. Presentations usually include the following: Consideration of the factors which influence pupils’ mathematics learning, an explanation of the rationale and learning theory underpinning the Numicon approach to teaching arithmetic and an overview of the Numicon teaching programme. Presentations are illustrated with photographs and video (where applicable). A small exhibition of Numicon teaching materials can also be mounted.
