Numicon for Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

on our home page. This will help you understand why maths is so
difficult for so many learners and how Numicon's multi sensory maths
resources and teaching materials help.
This page introduces the Numicon resources available for different classroom settings through Nursery and Reception. Use the links for detailed information on the different resources and to download support materials. You can also download a spreadsheet containing prices and recommended quantities of resources that we recommend for each setting in a one form entry school for primary maths.

The
image below gives an overview of ALL of our kits and how these
interrelate. Please see the sections below specific to your situation
for details of which of these are most appropriate. The Kits work in progression, so after completing the activities in a
Kit the pupils are then ready to move on to the next Kit, i.e. after
completing on the Firm Foundations Activities the pupils
can progress to Kit One.
Nursery settings
Children meet very important ideas about number long before they start school, and as adults it is easy to underestimate how difficult these ideas are. Our 1st Steps with Numicon in the Nursery Kit is designed to give children a sound start to their maths understanding through conversation with Nursery practitioners alongside interactive and playful activities. The teaching guide gives straightforward explanation of the mathematical ideas children meet as this vital stage.
Reception settings
As we know, children’s early experiences at home and school have a huge
impact on their later achievement in early years maths. This is why we have
carefully developed our Numicon Firm
Foundations Kit and our Numicon at the Seaside Big Book Set for
children aged 3-5. Through playing with Numicon Maths Shapes in the
progressive series of practical fun activities, young children learn
about number ideas and how numbers fit together, in a way not provided
just by written numerals.
All of our Kits come with a Teaching Guide, Programme of Activities and Assessment Tools plus in the Firm Foundations Kit there are also ideas for extending the core
activities through inside and outdoor play. All of the activities signal the all important maths
language. The work covered in the Numicon Firm Foundations Kit forms a vital foundation for future learning and so it is very important that children have a solid understanding of these ideas before moving on to Kits 1 and 2.

Numicon At Home £5 Voucher scheme
The Numicon At Home Scheme is designed to encourage parents to work in
partnership with the school to help give their children a good start in
understanding number ideas by following the playful activities in 1st
Steps with Numicon - At Home Kit. Most parents want to help their children
with Maths but are not sure how to do so, and many schools using
Numicon in their EYFS classes are encouraging parents to use First
Steps with Numicon at Home because they see real benefits for the
children when the resources is used both at home and in school.
