Using Numicon for Intervention

Whether you are involved in Every Child Counts or not, here is an overview for using Numicon as an approach for Intervention and advice on what materials to purchase.
Learners of all ages need to be competent with the activities within Firm Foundations or Closing the Gap with Numicon before starting calculating work in Kits 1 and 2. Specifically they should be able to:
- Order Numicon Shapes, giving them number names and attaching numerals
- Group objects into Numicon patterns without counting
- Combine Numicon in addition
- Compare Numicon Shapes in subtraction
- Confidently use the language of addition and subtraction
It is therefore important to at least have the Firm Foundations or Closing the Gap Teaching Materials Files to allow Learners to progress through these early activities.
Numicon for Intervention- common features
Numicon is being used very successfully for Learning Support in an increasing number of settings (please see details of different research) however the common features can all be summarised thus:
The Intervention lasts between 10 and 16 weeks, with between three and five sessions per week
Daily work for 25 minutes: group work or one-to-one
- Start with a familiar activity
- Counting session supported with number lines
- Main activity: pattern work or calculating activities from Numicon programme
- Application
- Reflection
Numicon is most successful where children use Numicon daily in intervention AND Numicon is also used within the whole class lessons (with the IWB Software and Numicon shapes)

Wave 3
intervention in KS2:
- Firm Foundations/Closing the Gap with Numicon Teaching Materials File
- Numicon Kit 1 for One to One (or a Class Kit 1 if you are working with more than 1-3 pupils)
- Numicon Number Rods
- 2 extra Baseboards
- Conversion to Kit 2
Also:
Our Training DVD 'Working with Numicon' is a great resource to support teachers and TA's. The DVD is broken up into 6 sections so is ideal for staff sessions with ideas for discussion and so on. This will give all staff a good overview of Numicon and help to give them the confidence to get started.
Our Interactive Whiteboard Software is also a good resource, for inclusion in the classroom. We have small bags of Numicon 1-10 shapes for children to have their set of shapes when responding to questions in whole class teaching.
