Numicon Kit 1
Suitable for pupils working at National Curriculum Level 1B – 2B. Numicon Kit 1 builds on the Firm Foundations Kit. Before starting the calculating work in Kit 1 pupils should be competent with the Foundation Activities:
- Ordering Numicon Shapes, giving them number names and attaching numerals.
- Grouping objects into Numicon without counting
- Combining Numicon shapes in addition
- Combining Numicon shapes in subtraction
- Confidently using the language of addition and subtraction
Pupils of all abilities should be given the opportunity to explore and experiment with the Shapes on first meeting them. The majority of pupils will achieve the above very quickly. However, where pupils are finding maths difficult the Assessment section included in Kit 1 will help to assess where to start pupils on the teaching programme, and these do make reference to the Firm Foundations Activity Cards.
Numicon Shapes continue to be extensively used in the Kit 1 teaching activities and, to broaden pupils’ understanding of number, we also suggest the use of Number Rods. Please note that Number Rods are not included in the Kits since so many schools already have these, however if you do need to order them they are available separately. The trays to use with Number Rods are included.
The Kit 1 teaching materials are organised into a ring binder containing the Teaching Guide, Programme of Activities, Assessment Tools and Photocopy Masters. The Card Summary and suggested Order for Teaching the Activities are designed to support teachers’ planning.
Ideas covered in Kit 1 include:
Signs of arithmetic notation + = –
Consolidation of ± facts to 10
Place value ± to 100
