Numicon for use at home

If you are new to Numicon we encourage you to watch the video 'Making Numbers Real' on our home page. This will help you understand why maths is so difficult for so many learners and how Numicon's multi-sensory maths resources and teaching materials help.

This page introduces the Numicon resources suitable for parents to use with their children at home and the resources for Home Educators. Use the links for detailed information on the different resources and to download support materials.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the information on this page.

The image below gives an overview of ALL of our kits and how these interrelate. Please see the sections below specific to your situation for details of which of these are most appropriate. The Kits work in progression, so after completing the activities in a Kit the pupils are then ready to move on to the next Kit, i.e. after completing on the Closing the Gap with Numicon Activities the pupils can progress to Kit One.

Numicon Maths Resources Overview

Children and their parents (pupils aged 3 to 5 years)

As we know, children’s early experiences at home have a huge impact on their later achievement in maths. Numicon is designed to give children the understanding of number ides and number relationships that are essential for success in maths.

Our 1st Steps with Numicon - At Home Kit makes maths fun and engaging for children and their parents or carers.

Also available is 'Numicon at the seaside' Number book and CD of songs. Each number from 1-10 is brought to life through a combination of picture and song, which encourages children’s understanding of mathematical ideas and the connections between numbers. There is also guidance booklet which will aid parents by helping their children get to grips with the all important mathematical language that they meet in school.

The Numicon At Home £5 Voucher scheme (starting in Sept 09)

Schools are encouraging parents to use Numicon At Home because they see real benefits for the children and the school. We have developed a scheme to support the use of the resources both at home and in school. Please see this flyer for an explanation of the scheme and how you can help your child's school.

Children and their parents (older pupils struggling with maths)

Versions of all our core kits are available as one to one kits for working with 1 or 2 pupils; perfect for parents working at home. All pupils new to Numicon need time to explore Numicon Shapes and Baseboard, and to construct their own meaning for the Shapes to attach number values to them, before moving on to use them in calculating. For parents of children who have Special Needs, or who are experiencing significant difficulties we recommend Closing the Gap with Numicon which will help children to build a firm basis of fundamental understanding before moving on to the Kit 1 and Kit 2 Teaching Programme. The best way to purchase the resources is with a One to One Closing the Gap with Numicon Kit and then progressing with our Conversion Kits, this avoids unnecessary duplication of equipment. If your child is using the Numicon resources at school then they will already have had the opportunity to use the materials before. In this case if they are competent with the resources you could progress straight to the calculating in Kits One and Two.

We recommend complementing the core kits with our Cuisenaire Number Rods as these are not included in the Kits, however, they are used in the activities in Kits One and Two as a different representation of number.

Home Educators

Versions of all our core kits are available as one to one kits for working with 1 or 2 pupils; perfect for home educators. We recommend that all pupils new to Numicon will need to cover the initial activities in Firm Foundations before moving on to the calculating in Kits One and Two. The best way to purchase the resources is with a One to One Firm Foundation Kit and then progressing with our Conversion Kits, thereby only purchasing the plastic elements required once and avoiding duplication.

We recommend complementing the core kits with our Cuisenaire Number Rods as these are not included in the Kits, however, they are used in the activities in Kits One and Two as a different representation of number. We also recommend a Numicon Pan Balance and the Working with Numicon – DVD and training resource.
