About the Numicon Intervention Programme
The Numicon Intervention Programme is designed to be conducted by a TA or a Teacher following specific training from an independent Numicon Trainer or from LA Staff who have been trained by Numicon. The programme involves a multi-sensory approach to number representation, maximising children’s opportunities to blend action and imagery with their use of mathematical language and symbols.
How it works
As part of the Intervention Programme Training the TA / Teacher will receive an Intervention Manual (it is not available separately), which includes a diagnostic assessment, planning, teaching and assessing guidance, lessons to familiarise pupils (and the adult!) with Numicon and 'next steps' to support the child after the intervention.
The TA / Teacher will use the results from the initial diagnostic assessment and the Planning Signposts in the Intervention Manual to determine which Numicon Teaching Activities they should refer to specific to the difficulties that have been identified. In addition, the Planning Signposts suggest different Numicon Homework Activities to support the child's learning. Up to 12 weeks.
Frequency of sessions
Wave 2 – at least twice weekly with groups of 2, 3 or 4.
Wave 3 – three times a week with individuals or groups of 2.

Weeks 1-3: Initial assessment followed by introductory activities to familiarise children with Numicon.
Weeks 4-11: Address areas of difficulty as identified from the diagnostic assessment and familiarisation activities.
Week 12: Self-help strategies and assessment of progress made during the intervention.
