Key Stage 1 maths... and beyond
Numicon Kits 1 and 2 are designed for pupils aged 5-7, (KS1). The teaching programmes in these Kits follow on from the Firm Foundations Kit so it is vital that children have a solid understanding of the ideas covered in the Firm Foundations Kit before moving on to Kits 1 and 2. The multi-sensory teaching programmes in both Kit 1 and Kit 2 help children to secure understanding and help teachers to meet the Primary Strategy Objectives for Years 1 and 2 (see this document for more details). The first part of the teaching programme in Kit 1 helps with planning children’s transition from EYFS to Year 1 and goes on to introduce children to the many big ideas which will form the basis for all their later work in Key Stage 2, therefore these Kits are useful for all pupils who are working at English National Curriculum Levels 1-3.
Numicon Firm Foundations Class Kit
>> Suitable for children aged 3-5 in schools and nurseries, the activities in this kit lay cover the Foundation Stage curriculum and lay the foundations for successful mathematics by establishing an early understanding of number relationships.
Numicon Kit 1 Class Kit
>> The activities in this kit build on the Foundation Stage activities and are suitable for pupils age 5-6 working at English National Curriculum levels 1 and 2.
Numicon Kit 2 Class Kit
>> The Kit 2 teaching programme builds on ideas met in Kit 1. New users should be familiarised with Numicon Shapes and Number Rods before starting the teaching activities in this Kit.
